The village is situated in a unique haze-covered verdant valley. The Alona was swathed in verdant vegetation, crowded into gardens with diverse fruit trees and vast nut tree groves. You will also find the water source, along with the history of the Fotistra location.
The “narrows” of Alona village are the main streets, which are paved and largely covered by dense vegetation, giving them the appearance of a path through a tropical forest rather than a Mediterranean mountain village. Together, the traditional stone homes of the ancient neighbourhoods and the stone roadways paved by the mountains evoke memories of bygone eras.
Saint Alexandra the Queen was martyred on the same days as Saint George the Trophy Bearer and a devotee of the Virgin of Portatissa. This cave is dedicated to her. Alexandra Gavriilidou of Alona was the inspiration behind the creation of the Holy Cross chapel. The cave was discovered during excavations and is dedicated to Saint Alexandra the Queen, who was imprisoned in underground prisons (where she was martyred on April 21, 303 AD) by her husband Diocletian as a test for the torture he ordered against Saint George (Note: the main church in our village is dedicated to Saint George).
George Seferis Monument, Fotistra Water source, and the village’s lovely Traditional Alleys are among the village’s most notable attractions. Despite this, the average traveller can cover all directions because there are so many desirable destinations.
