About Shrine

As her name implies, the monument of Our Lady of Portatissa (copy of the icon of Our Lady of Portatissa from the Monastery of Ibera Agios Mons) was constructed for the protection of the pilgrimage. The icon of the Virgin of Portatissa, whose model resides in the Monastery of Iberon, is considered the most miraculous icon on Mount Athos and the patron saint of the entire mountain.
The chapel and cave are available daily to visitors who wish to pray, make supplications, and invoke the assistance of the Holy Cross, Our Lady, and Saint Alexandra the Queen. For more information, please call (+357 99 651 508).

The chapel of the Holy Cross, which belonged to Ms. Alexandra Gavriilidou from Alona, was designed in the form of a dream. Saint Alexandra the Queen is venerated in the cave, which was discovered during excavations. Saint George, whom Diocletian’s husband executed on April 21, 303 AD, was held captive in underground prisons until he was tried for the tortures he ordered against Saint George (Note: Mr. The Church of our village is dedicated to Saint George).

About Chapel

The chapel of Panaia Kardakiotissa was likely constructed in the 15th century and is located one kilometre to the northwest of Alona, immediately adjacent to the route that connected the village to Nicosia. The single-aisled church in the Vasiliki style with a wooden roof, built on a hill that embraced it from the south, was the Akritas, so to speak, of the Alona settlement that protected it from the north and served as a place of hope and refuge for those who fled or returned to the village. To the east of the chapel and towards the river were the ruins of a small settlement whose date of establishment is uncertain.

About Church

Agios Georgios church was constructed on the ruins of an earlier structure that was destroyed by fire around 1830. It is a three-aisled basilica with a gabled roof that was inaugurated in 1857 by Meletios I, the bishop of Kyrenia. The exhibition Treasures of the Church of Agios Georgios Alona features over 40 authentic artefacts and a wealth of supervisory and informative materials, eradicating the mediaeval and post-Byzantine face and personality of Alona.

Panagia Kardakiotissa, which dates to the 15th century, and Agios Georgios, which contains an exceptional icon of the saint that dates to 1835, are two of the village’s most interesting ancient churches. Also, there are Timios and Zoopoios Stavros Chapel and Panayia Portaitissa Shrine. Every November 3, a large celebration is held in the village square in honour of the saint.
